Swimming in the Crystalline Waters of Lumi i Shalës

From the emerald green of Komani Lake to the bright turquoise, crystal clear waters of Lumi i Shalës.

Some call Lumi i Shalës Albania’s Thailand, but we find this place beyond compare. The high altitude, the lusciously green, piercing mountains and the crisp air and the serene sound of the river.

When the emerald green water of Komani Lake shifts to a crystal clear turquoise, we’re on Shala River, Lumi i Shalës. The river twists and bends, and the chalky white river bed is magnified by the clear water.

We couldn’t wait to jump into the ice cold water, which is believed to have great healing properties.

The guesthouse we are staying at is a fairytale built on the slope of a mountain, built by the family that has owned the land for generations. Everything is made by hand, from the wooden teacups to the furniture not to mention the entire house.

For dinner, we enjoy delicious grilled trout caught upstream. The sallad and vegetables grow in the sloping garden, and the cheese comes from a neighbouring village, taking a day to deliver by foot. After nightfall, we gather around an open fire, share stories and songs, and toast marshmallows. We are served mountain tea with honey from the family’s bees.

We can’t wait to come back to the serenity of this remote gem.

Rafting in Osumi Canyon

We went rafting in the Osumi Canyon and it was a day to remember to say the least. Our guides were a rafting group that founded the Albanian Rafting Federation, and are members with full rights in the International Rafting Federation. We were in good hands, in other words. Companies such as these are passionate about the nature of this beautiful country, and are dedicated to sustainable development of tourism in Albania. To make the untouched nature discoverable to people without disturbing ecosystems. We like that!. Have a look at this amazing film by Filip Ljungberg from our adventure!

Kepi i Rodonit – The Land of the Giants

Kepi i Rodonit is also called “The Land of the Giants” as it is the peninsula that Odysseus was sent to meet the Cyclops in Greek mythology. Skeleton parts from humans approximated to be over 2.5 m tall have been found here.

It is said that the name Rodoni comes from a God in the Illyrian mythology – The God of the Sea.

It is said that the name Rodoni comes from a God in the Illyrian mythology – The God of the Sea. According to mythology, Rodoni led this region between 146-150 bc. He has always gained praise by the Illyrians and his character has been made as symbol for immortality.

On the tip of the peninsula you find Rodon Castle built 1451 by Skanderbeg. Today the castle is mostly under water, and offers an interesting snorkel experience.

The Kepi i Rodonit peninsula offers fantastic nature with orchards and wild landscapes. On one beach you can find a tent hotel during the summer, offering a close-to-nature experience. There are completely untouched beaches, opportunities for hiking, biking and kayaking.

Blue Eye – A magical Water Spring in a Fairytale Forest

On our recent tour of the Riviera coast in the south, we found so many fun spontaneous detours that we almost didn’t have time for our last planned stop – Syri i Kaltër (or Blue Eye ) – a water source where crystal-clear water bubbles up from a depth of 50 meters , with discharge rate of 18400 liters per second. But at the last minute, Flamur steered the mini-bus towards the site anyway. We just have to take our guests here! And we were happy for that decision.

We waded, jumped, dived and played in the magical water. It is very cold, but somehow the sensation of the beautiful surroundings makes you forget the temperature. Lapis blue dragonflies danced with each other in the fresh air under massive oak trees. My senses are enticed to discover the surroundings, my skin is charged and soft, and I feel alive.

Dajti – Adventure is only a Cable Car Ride Away from the Heart of Tirana

From Tirana, there is a cable car that takes you up to Mount Dajti and Dajti National Park. At just above 1600 m above sea level, Mount Dajti is the grand backdrop to the entire city of Tirana. It’s Tirana’s very own hausberg (every city should really have their own house mountian). You can access the peak of the mountain, also referred to as the balcony of Tirana for its pristine view, by a modest mountain path. Dajti National Park is the home to diverse ecosystems and its fragmented topography is to thank for the biodiversity and rich flaura and fauna. There is so much to explore! From kind paths to more challenging hiking trails. Whatever you choose to do, you are guaranteed breathtaking views of the landscape and city below.
